HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After winning its weekend series over UNCW, the Southern Miss baseball team returns to action Tuesday when they face UTRGV in a 6 p.m. non-conference tilt at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (11-5) enjoy a solid start to the season, having won all four non-conference weekend series, and enter this affair with a two-game winning streak. The team's 16-game record is a game better than Ostrander's initial season as the Golden Eagles have started the year at least 10-6 in every season since the 2016 campaign. Except for the 2020 COVID season, Southern Miss has reached the NCAA Tournament each year during this stretch.
Southern Miss plays a UTRGV squad that holds an 11-2 record after a three-game sweep at New Orleans over the weekend. They outscored the Privateers 33-15 and hold the No. 1 RPI spot in the country by WarrenNolan.com.
This game marks the initial meeting between the two schools in baseball.
Southern Miss got some outstanding performances over the weekend, including from junior first baseman Matthew Russo, who hit a game-winning home run on Saturday.
Fellow teammate, sophomore Jake Cook, enjoyed the best weekend of his young career for the Golden Eagles, going 7-for-10 in the series against UNCW, which included a pair of three-hit games. He registered his first career triple over the set and drove in a pair of runs. He now leads the team with a .405 batting average.
Following the UTRGV game, Southern Miss completes a seven-game homestand starting Saturday at 6 p.m., against Old Dominion in the program's Sun Belt Conference opening weekend.
