HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Matt Adams limited UTRGV to four hits over 6 2/3 innings and Southern Miss scored runs in three separate innings to defeat the Vaqueros 3-1 Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (12-5) won for the third-straight time as they snapped a UTRGV seven-game winning streak.
Adams started his outing strong by retiring the first eight batters he faced, before allowing a two-out single in the third. The sixth-year senior then got the next nine hitters out before allowing another two-out single in the sixth.
UTRGV (11-3) finally got on the board with a two-out solo home run from Amani Raygoza in the seventh, who belted his fifth of the year. Adams then surrendered only his fourth runner after that homer on a single and was then taken out of the game.
Adams registered the win and improved to 2-1 as he fanned a season-high 10 and did not allow a walk in his outing.
Freshman Brooks Willoughby got the final out of the seventh before Colby Allen retired sixth of the eight batters he faced over the final two frames to earn his fourth save. Allen did fan a pair of hitters.
The Golden Eagles took the lead early with a couple of solid at bats from Ozzie Pratt.
The senior from Alesville, Miss., homered to right center in the first, for his second of the year, before adding an RBI groundout in the second.
Southern Miss finished their scoring in fifth. After a one-out single from Davis Gillespie, Nick Monistere doubled down the left field line to score the runner from first base.
UTRGV starter Francisco Hernandez (1-1) gave up two runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout over 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Southern Miss returns to action Friday when they open Sun Belt Conference play against Old Dominion. Game time for Friday is set for 6 p.m.
