Women's Tennis Sweeps Opening Weekend

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Southern Miss women's tennis team (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) opened its spring season in dominant fashion, securing a 5-1 victory over Chattanooga on Friday afternoon, followed by a 4-2 win against Northwestern State on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles' 2-0 start marks the first time since the 2021-22 season that the team ended its opening weekend undefeated.

Southern Miss set the tone early in Friday's opener with a thrilling doubles battle on court one. Returners Hannah Chambers and Angelina Blinova took down UTC's Rozalie Dohnalova and Alice Hall in a dramatic 7-6 tiebreaker, deciding the point with an 11-9 clinching victory.

UTC responded with a win on court two, but the pair of Sakura Sudo and Miranda Xu secured a 6-2 victory over Zara Burns and Margaret Manolache, giving the Golden Eagles the early advantage.

Momentum from Chambers and Blinova's dramatic finish carried over into singles play as Blinova, Xu, Parker and Wunnenberg each delivered singles wins to seal the match. Xu clinched the victory for Southern Miss, battling past Savannah Presson in a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 contest.

The Golden Eagles continued its strong start against Northwestern State on Sunday, again setting the mark in doubles competition. Blinova and Chambers powered through with a 6-2 win, while Sudo and Xu blanked their opponents 6-0.

While Xu secured Friday's match, it was her doubles partner, Sudo, who sealed Sunday's victory. Sudo outlasted Valeria Ortega 6-3, 7-6 in singles to ensure Southern Miss' perfect start to the season.

The Golden Eagles will look to build on their early success next Saturday in New Orleans, where they face UNO at 11 a.m.
