FORT WORTH, Texas – Braeden Sloan threw four scoreless relief innings and TCU scored four runs late to defeat Southern Miss 5-2 Friday night at Lupton Stadium in the first of a three-game, non-conference weekend series.
The loss was the third in a row for the Golden Eagles (7-3) as they were limited to four hits in the contest.
Sloan entered the game to start the sixth with the game tied at 2-2. After walking two of the first three batters he faced, Sloan settled down and retired the final 11 Golden Eagles down the stretch. He earned the victory to improve to 1-0 by fanning seven and walking two over the final four frames.
The Horned Frogs had tied things in the fifth. With runners at the corners and one out, reliever Colby Allen slipped on the mound and did not deliver a pitch, resulting in a balk to allow the tying run to score.
With runners at the corners again an inning later and one out, Sawyer Strosnider stole second and Golden Eagle catcher Lawson Odom's throw was wild, allowing the one runner to score and Strosnider advance to third. He then scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly by Colton Griffin.
TCU finished the scoring in the seventh on RBI double by Chase Brunson.
After allowing a first-inning run to the Horned Frogs (7-2) as Isaac Cadena singled and then took advantage of a two passed balls and a wild pitch to score the game's first run, Southern Miss took the lead with solo runs in the second and third innings off TCU starter Caedmon Parker.
Matthew Russo opened the second with a triple to center and then scored on a two-out ground out by Seth Smith to tie the score. Ozzie Pratt doubled to begin things an inning later. After two outs, he scored on a Nick Monistere single up the middle.
Parker limited the Golden Eagles to two runs over four innings, giving up four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. USM starter JB Middleton allowed an unearned run over four innings with three hits and two walks to go along with a career-high tying six strikeouts. Neither pitcher figured in the game's final decision.
Allen fell to 1-1 by giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and a strikeout over the final four stanzas.
Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m., Saturday.
