Beach Volleyball Plays in First Road Action of the Season at FIU Invite

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss beach volleyball opens an 18-game stretch away from home on Friday at the FIU Invite in Miami, Fla. Hosted by No. 17 FIU, the Golden Eagles (1-4) will take on the hosts for the first action of the weekend while also playing Palm Beach Atlantic, Utah and No. 12 Florida Atlantic.

FIU Beach Volleyball Courts // Miami, Fla.
Southern Miss opens the tournament against the host and nationally ranked FIU Panthers. FIU enters the week with a 2-2 overall record after picking up wins over AVCA Small College powerhouse Tampa and No. 14 Washington last week in Tampa, Fla. The Panthers' two defeats both came in 3-2 decisions to No. 13 Georgia State and No. 16 Florida Atlantic.
FIU is led by second-year head coach Terri Del Conte, who currently holds a 23-13 overall record in Miami. In her first season, Del Conte led the Panthers to the 22-11 finish that ended in a 3-2 defeat in the Conference USA Championship to No. 5 Tulane. Del Conte sports a career ledger of 92-93 after stops at Missouri State (2018-20) and UAB (2021-23).
FIU's Zuzanna Bielak and Aleksandra Chudzik were named to the C-USA Beach Volleyball Preseason Poll. Chudzik earned three letters at Southern Miss. before transferring to FIU this year.

Friday's second game for Southern Miss sees the Golden Eagles take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. PBA enters the week with a 4-0 record as a Division I independent. The Sailfish defeated Florida Southern twice, as well as Webber International, Warner and Saint Leo to reach their unbeaten streak.
Head coach Jazz Schmidt is in her first season leading the Sailfish after collecting her first win as a coach last week. Schmidt, a 2022 graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic, played for the Sailfish's indoor and beach volleyball teams before transferring to Creighton to finish her career.
Palm Beach Atlantic finished last season 19-17 and advanced to the AVCA Small College National Championship Silver Bracket title before dropping a 4-1 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Serena Baumgart and Anna Dunbar earned Sunshine State Conference Pair of the Week honors on Feb. 17 after a 2-0 week at the top flight.

Southern Miss' Saturday action starts against Utah. The Utes enter the week with a spotless record with wins at UC Davis, over Santa Clara and two over San Jose State. Utah head coach Brenda Whicker owns a 49-110 overall record in eight seasons leading the Utes.
Utah is part of the inaugural season Big 12 of beach volleyball as one of four teams, joining Arizona, Arizona State and TCU. Utah finished the 2024 season 19-16 and 0-6 in Pac-12 action, falling 3-0 to Washington in the consolation round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

Southern Miss closes the tournament against No. 12 Florida Atlantic. The Sandy Owls finished opening weekend undefeated at the Tampa Invite in Tampa, Fla. FAU defeated No. 14 Washington, No. 17 FIU, Tampa and No. 13 Georgia State.
For their part in the action, Ashleigh Adams and Marketa Svozilova earned C-USA Pair of the Week for their 4-0 week as the Sandy Owls' top flight. The pair, along with Julie Honzovicova earned spots on the C-USA Beach Volleyball Preseason Team as well.
Head coach Steve Grotowski is 41-33 in his third season in Boca Raton. Grotowski led Florida Atlantic to an 18-19 finish last season where the San Owls fell to Tulane in the C-USA Semifinals.
