Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Louisiana Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carson Paetow provided the offensive explosion in the first game for Southern Miss, while Michael Ballard did it in the nightcap for Louisiana Tech as the Golden Eagles split a doubleheader with the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon, winning the opener, 8-4, and dropping the second game, 5-2, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles concluded the season-opening, eight-game homestand with a 7-1 record as they now take to the road for the next five that includes single games at in-state rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State, along with a three-game set at TCU next weekend.
In the opener, Paetow collected his first career two-homer game and tied a career-best with five RBI.
After giving up a pair of runs in the opening frame, the Golden Eagles registered five in the bottom of the first and never trailed again.
Joey Urban and Ozzie Pratt each singled to open the game. After a walk to Nick Monistere, Matthew Russo drove in the opening run. Davis Gillespie then added a sacrifice fly before Paetow hit a three-run shot off LA Tech starter Luke Nichols.
Paetow homered again two innings later and added an insurance run in the eighth on a Jake Cook sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs (5-2) got solo runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to keep it close.
Kros Sivley limited the Bulldogs to a run on four hits and two walks over six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 1-0. Colby Allen thew the final three frames to earn his second save. Nichols got tagged with the loss by allowing seven runs on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings.
In the nightcap, LA Tech scored a pair of runs in both the first and third innings. Ballard homered in the first and drove in a run in the ninth with an RBI single to lead the visitors.
Zeb Ruddell added a first-inning RBI single, while Eli Bresh added a run-scoring and Colton Coates an RBI groundout to give the Bulldogs the 4-2 advantage.
Southern Miss answered with a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Paetow in the sixth and Monistere homered for the first time this season in the eighth.
Luke Cooley limited the Golden Eagles to a run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 2-0. Blake Hooks got the final four outs for LA Tech to earn his second save. USM starter Matthew Adams allowed three runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
