HATTIESBURG, Miss. – JB Middleton, Micah Wascom and Josh Och combined to limit Louisiana Tech to one hit as Southern Miss won the series opener 4-0 Friday night over the Bulldogs at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles have now won their sixth-straight game to open the season, which accounts for the program's best start since the 2016 team went 7-0.
Middleton, in his second start of the season, limited the Bulldogs to a two-out single in the second as well as working around three walks and a throwing error over his five-inning start.
The Bulldogs (4-1) enjoyed their best scoring chance in the third on two walks and a fielder's choice to load the bases, but a strikeout by Sebastian Mexico ended the threat.
Middleton fanned a season-high six to get the victory and improve to 2-0.
Both Wascom and Och each then threw two innings apiece down the stretch. Wascom allowed just a walk and a hit batter with two strikeouts, while Och retired all six batters he faced with three strikeouts to collect his first save.
Golden Eagle pitching now has not allowed a run over the last 20 innings as the squad recorded its second consecutive shutout. It is the first back-to-back shutouts for Southern Miss since blanking Middle Tennessee on May 20-21, 2022.
The game also marked the first one-hitter for the Golden Eagles, since defeating UNO 12-0 on Feb. 21, 2023.
Southern Miss' offense scored solo runs in four different innings. That included a bases-loaded RBI single from Davis Gillespie in the opening frame. Gillespie then doubled in the fifth and scored one batter later via a double by Carson Paetow.
The Golden Eagles then added sacrifice flies from Gillespie in the seventh and Ozzie Pratt in the eighth to complete the game's scoring.
Bulldog starter Grant Hubka gave up two runs on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
Due to expected inclement weather in the area Sunday, the teams will now play a 12 noon doubleheader Saturday to complete the series.
Tickets for both game two and game three of the series over the weekend will be honored for Saturday's doubleheader.
Individuals with baseball parking will have access to their respective lots throughout the day. Basketball parking passes will be available for use at the end of the third inning of the second baseball game.
