Baseball Completes Four-Game Sweep of Lafayette with 5-1 Sunday Victory

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – True freshman Grayden Harris threw five shutout innings, as five Golden Eagle pitchers limited Lafayette to just three hits, in helping Southern Miss complete a four-game sweep over the Leopards 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (4-0) enjoyed their first four-game sweep of an opponent since beating Middle Tennessee in 2021.
Harris, who earned the victory, limited the Leopards (0-4) to just two hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts in his collegiate debut. Only one of the four base runners allowed got as far as second base, with one being picked off. He was followed by one-inning stints from Camden Sunstrom, Michael Fowler, Brooks Willoughby and Landen Payne. The four relievers combined for allowing a run on a hit with three walks and seven strikeouts over the final four frames.
Southern Miss jumped out early with four runs over the first two innings.
Ben Higdon led off the first with a bunt single. After a sacrifice from Ozzie Pratt, Nick Monistere drove in Higdon from second for the game's first run.
Carson Paetow started a three-run second with a double off Lafayette starter Trace Florio. After advancing to third on a flyout, Joey Urban plated Paetow with a single to center. Lawson Odom followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Urban then scored from third on a passed ball to make it 3-0, before Higdon finished the scoring with an RBI single to knock in Odom.
Florio gave up four runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings with a walk and two strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The Leopards tallied their lone run in seventh. With two outs, Alex Barrist walked and then scored a batter later when Easton Brenner's fly ball to center was lost in the sun and he was credited with an RBI double.
The Golden Eagles registered their final tally on an RBI bases-loaded walk for Drey Barrett.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday when they entertain in-state foe Mississippi State. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
