HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss welcomes in-state foe Mississippi State to Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field for the first time since 2018 when the two schools play Tuesday in a 6 p.m. contest.
The game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (4-0) opened the season with a four-game sweep of Lafayette, outscoring the Leopards 39-13. It was the first four-game sweep for the program since beating Middle Tennessee in 2021.
This contest marks the first time these Magnolia State foes have played at a campus site since 2019, when the Golden Eagles traveled to the newly renovated Dudy Noble Field in Starkville for a three-game set. The two teams last played at Pete Taylor Park in a three-game weekend to open the 2018 campaign with the Golden Eagles sweeping the series. A return game to Starkville is slated for March 4.
Through the first four games, Southern Miss has enjoyed a solid offensive performance to go along with strong starting pitching.
The Golden Eagle hitters averaged a .356 batting average to open the campaign and, after the first weekend of play, ranked No. 2 nationally for both hits (52) and doubles (18) as the squad enjoyed double-digit hits in all four contests.
Ozzie Pratt, who leads the team with a 10-game hitting streak, has enjoyed one of the better 2025 starts with a .500 average to go along with three doubles, a home run and seven RBI. Sophomore Davis Gillespie also enjoyed a stellar weekend that included a pair of four RBI contests. The Birmingham, Ala., native notched five hits – with two doubles and two homers – to go along with a team-best eight RBI, which included a game-winning sacrifice fly last Saturday in the opening game of the twinbill.
As for pitching, all four Southern Miss starters went at least five innings as they combined to put together a 0.82 ERA for the weekend over 22 innings that encompassed five walks and 22 strikeouts.
The Bulldogs (3-0) swept Manhattan to open their 2025 season at home last weekend.
The Golden Eagles continue their season-opening, eight-game homestand this weekend when they play host to Louisiana Tech for a three-game weekend series. The set starts Friday at 6 p.m.
