HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Southern Miss (2-1,0-0 Sun Belt) women's tennis team is set to host Nicholls (1-1, 0-0 Southland) Sunday at noon.
The Golden Eagles received its first loss of the season in a hard-fought 4-2 match against the UNO Privateers last weekend. The Privateers edged out with the victory in a match that had four of the six games advance into a third set.
Southern Miss and New Orleans battled throughout the contest, with Angelina Blinova securing a victory at the No. 1 position to give the Golden Eagles an early edge. Miranda Xu followed with a win at No. 3, putting Southern Miss ahead 2-1 entering the latter half of play. Two of the first three matches extended to a third set, and in a contested finish, New Orleans clinched the final win by just one point on court six.
The Colonels are coming off of a 4-0 win at home versus Jackson State on Friday and also earned a 7-0 victory at home against Coastal Alabama Community College last week. In this sweep, the Colonels only had one total game in matches where the opponent won more than two sets. Most notably, Blanca Losada, Noemie Piquet and Sophia Sara Sofarova did not lose a set in their singles game (6-0, 6-0).
Sunday's matchup will mark the ninth all-time meeting against Nicholls. The Golden Eagles look to extend their winning streak against the Colonels to four games.
