Women’s Tennis Holds Off Nicholls to Preserve Undefeated Home Record

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Southern Miss women's tennis team (3-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) secured a thrilling 4-3 win over Nicholls on Sunday at home, preserving an undefeated 3-0 record in Hattiesburg this season, the program's best start at home since the 2021-2022 season.
The Golden Eagles improved to 3-1 on the season, clinching Sunday's match behind another strong doubles performance and key singles victories from Miranda Xu, Sakura Sudo and Gagana Mohan Kumar.
Southern Miss set the tone early, winning the doubles point for the fourth consecutive time this season. The duo of Hannah Chambers and Malannia Vashkevich earned a 6-2 win, while Jordan Parker and Talia Wunnenberg secured a tight 7-5 victory. The third doubles match remained unfinished at 6-6.
In singles play, the Golden Eagles struck first as Mohan Kumar took down Amalie Grube Andersen 6-2, 6-1. Nicholls responded with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, but Southern Miss battled back. Xu secured a victory on court three, winning by retirement, but Nicholls' Julia Bordiginon forced a decisive final match with a three-set win over Wunnenberg at No. 5.
With the match tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to court four, where Sudo faced off against Noemie Piquet. Sudo took the first set 6-3 but dropped the second 2-6, setting up a final frame. The freshman delivered under pressure, sealing Southern Miss' third victory of the season with a 6-3 third-set win.
