
Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader over Lafayette Saturday Afternoon at Pete Taylor Park

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Davis Gillespie had two home runs, drove in eight runs, including the game-winner in the opening game, as Southern Miss swept Lafayette 7-6 in 10 innings and 18-4 Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles opened the season 3-0 and the play the Leopards (0-3) in the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
After Ozzie Pratt opened the scoring in the opening game with a two-run, first-inning homer, the visitors scored the next five runs with two in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Down 5-2, Southern Miss got things going offensively in the seventh. Ben Higdon and Pratt opened the frame with back-to-back singles. After a lineout, Matthew Russo doubled in a run. Gillespie then followed with a three-run home run to give the home squad a 6-5 advantage.
The Golden Eagles, though, could not close out the game as Easton Brenner homered with one out in the ninth for Lafayette to tie the score at 6-6.
Southern Miss then could not score in the ninth and the game went to extra innings.
Josh Och (1-0) entered the game on the mound to start the tenth. After allowing a single to open the stanza, he retired the next three Lafayette batters, including one by strikeout, to get the victory.
Higdon started the winning inning by reaching on a throwing error. After a sacrifice from Pratt, Nick Monistere was intentionally walk and Russo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That setup the game-winning sacrifice fly by Gillespie to right field.
Corey Savedoff, the fourth of four Leopard pitchers, suffered the loss and fell to 1-0.
In the nightcap, Southern Miss scored in four different innings, which included an eight-run fourth and a seven-run seventh to capture the second contest.
Gillespie led the way with two hits and four RBI which included a third inning sacrifice fly, a fourth-inning RBI single and a two-run homer in the seventh.
Pratt added three hits in the contest with two RBI, while Russo drove in three runs on three hits. Drey Barrett also hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot.
Matt Adams, who had not thrown since June of 2023 due to injury, returned to complete six innings of work. He did not allow a run on three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 1-0.
Lafayette starter Tristan Helmrick allowed four runs on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
