HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Savannah Van Gaalen nailed a massive putt as Southern Miss stormed back to win The Judson in a playoff against Tulane at Hattiesburg Country Club.
Following the two-hole playoff, Taylor Trible went off hole 17 in a playoff with Francesca Pompa for the individual title. Trible proceeded to birdie the hole and claim her first collegiate individual win. The Golden Eagles entered the day three strokes behind the Green Wave before making a late push on their home course.
Southern Miss went four-under par today, marking the first time all season the Golden Eagles had gone under par in all three rounds. The Golden Eagles also shattered the 54-hole low with an 851 this week — the previous low was 859 set at the ULM Invitational last season.
The Golden Eagles used seven birdies across the final four holes to force the playoff. Trible had three of those as she putted in for birdie on holes 14, 16, and 17 to finish with a two-under 70. Louise Cuyvers had the low round of the day for Southern Miss as she carded a three-under 69 to secure a sixth-place finish. Meanwhile, Liv Romer captured her best finish this season as she finished in fourth with a one-under 71.
Morgan Guepet and Van Gaalen both finished with a one-over 73. Van Gaalen's putt on the second playoff hole was the difference maker for Southern Miss. The freshman walked in a 24-foot putt to give Southern Miss its second win of the season. On the individual side, Ava Kight shot a six-over 68 and Fernanda Gorostiaga had a seven-over 79.
The Judson wrapped up Southern Miss' fall schedule as it won't make another tournament appearance until Feb. 16 at The Great River Cup hosted at Windance Country Club in Gulfport.
