
Volleyball Prepares for Ellesyn Invitational

MISSOULA, Mont.- Southern Miss Volleyball heads to Missoula for the Ellesyn Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7, with their first match against Utah Valley at 2 p.m. CT (1 p.m. MT).
Other matches for the Golden Eagles include matches against Boise State on Friday at 6 p.m. CT (5 p.m. MT) and against Montana on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT (11 a.m. MT).
Friday's match will be the first time the Golden Eagles will play against Utah Valley in program history.
Head Coach Sam Atoa is coaching his 26th season with the Wolverines. Utah Valley currently holds a 3-0 overall record and a 0-0 Western Athletic Conference record.
Southern Miss leads in digs and digs per set, with 145 digs to Utah Valley's 123, and has a higher number of digs per set with 14.5, while Utah Valley has 12.30.
Sunni Sheppard claims 45 of those digs playing libero for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss will face Boise State on Friday evening. This will also be the first time they have competed against each other in program history.
Head Coach Shawn Garus kicks off his 16th season with the Broncos and his 23rd year as a head coach.
The Golden Eagles will take on Montana in their final invitational match on Saturday morning. Southern Miss leads 1-0 in the all-time series, where the Golden Eagles won 3-0 in 1999 in Corvallis, Ore. Montnana stands 1-2 overall, and 0-0 in the Big Sky conference.
In a statistical comparison, Southern Miss leads in kills, hitting percentage, assists, aces, digs and points per set.
Head Coach Allison Lawrence joins the Grizzlies for her eighth season as a head coach and her 15th with the program.Â
