
Soccer Drops First Conference Match at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va.-Southern Miss Soccer (1-5, 0-1 Sun Belt) fell 7-2 in its first conference match of the season on the road against James Madison (3-3-2, 1-0 Sun Belt).
While the Golden Eagles ended a four-game scoring drought by scoring two goals early in the first period, the Dukes responded with seven unanswered goals to take its first victory in the second all-time meeting between the two programs.
After enduring an hour-long lightning delay to the start of the match, the Golden Eagles leapt to action, converting its first points since the season-opener on a shot from sophomore Rebeka Vega in the seventh minute. Vega, who made just her second start of the season since returning from the 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup, scored her third career goal to give Southern Miss the early lead.
While another lightning delay postponed the match for another two hours, the Golden Eagles picked up from where they left, as Adaira Nakano added the team's second goal two minutes after play resumed. Nakano, who scored in the season-opener, tallied her second goal of the season and ninth of her career.
JMU quickly answered Southern Miss, scoring three goals within five minutes to claim the lead. Ariana Reyes capped a four-goal first period for the Dukes with a goal in the 39th minute.
JMU added to its lead, as Ginny Lackey scored her second goal of the match for a brace. Amanda Attanasi and Ellie Cook tallied the Dukes' final goals of the match.
JMU outshot Southern Miss 17-8 in the match, firing 11 on target. Starting goalkeeper Maddie Ellis made three saves, while Kesaia Bruni recorded one save in the match.
