Soccer Begins Conference Play at James Madison

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Soccer (1-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) launches its third season of competition in the Sun Belt Conference with its first road match at James Madison (2-3-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) in program history on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Southern Miss concluded its nonconference slate last week against Ole Miss, the third Southeastern Conference opponent of the team's schedule.
While the Golden Eagles outshot the Rebels 17-8 on a rain-soaked pitch in Oxford, Ole Miss converted its lone shot on target of the game as Aubrey Mister scored in the 18th minute to win the match 1-0.
Goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni made her second start of the season in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Grace O'Shaughnessy made her second appearance of the season in the last ten minutes of the match.
Two Golden Eagles made their first appearances of the season against Ole Miss. Sophomore Anatu Sadat made her Southern Miss debut, starting for the Golden Eagles and playing a total of 49 minutes. Sophomore forward Rebeka Vega also made her first appearance of the season after concluding her international tour for Venezuela at the 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, playing 32 minutes in the match.
Southern Miss will now travel to James Madison after the Dukes split a two-game road stand, dropping a match at West Virginia 2-0 Thursday and then blanking East Carolina 2-0 this past Sunday.

Southern Miss Notes
- Southern Miss' 15.60 shots per match rank second in the Sun Belt, only behind Louisiana's 15.90 per game. The Golden Eagles started the season with 43 shots versus MVSU, which rank as the fourth-most in program history and most in a game since Aug. 30, 2013. Alice Williamson leads the team with 19 shots this season.
- The Golden Eagles are looking to end a four-game scoring drought, the longest since a five- game streak in 2015.
- Freshman Raquelle Mitchell leads the team with two goals throughout four games, scoring a brace in her debut against MVSU. Her brace marked the first time a Golden Eagle has scored multiple goals in their debut since senior transfer Obafemi Alao scored two against South Alabama on Aug. 26, 2008.
- Bruni leads the team with 12 saves and ranks ninth in the conference with a .706 save percentage.
Scouting James Madison
- The Dukes are led by seventh-year head coach Joshua Walters. Walters led the Dukes to the Sun Belt championship match for the second consecutive season in 2023 and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament for their first appearance in eight years. Walters holds a 53-44-20 record with JMU.
- JMU currently leads the Sun Belt in RPI, ranking 71st in the nation.
- The Dukes were selected to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference Coaches Poll, receiving three first-place votes. Junior Solei Flores earned Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors.
- JMU's 6.86 shots per game rank last in the Sun Belt, but the Dukes have scored nine goals this season and rank seventh in the conference with 27 points.
- Ariana Reyes, Sophia Verrecchia and Ginny Lackey each have scored two goals this season for JMU. Reyes leads the team with six points, having recorded two assists along with teammates Shea Collins and Lexi Vanderlinden. Lackey led JMU to a 2-0 victory in the last game against East Carolina, scoring a brace for her first career points. Verrechia was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week earlier this season.
- Goalkeeper Sofia DeCerb has started all seven matches and played all 630 minutes this season, recording two shutouts. DeCerb ranks third in the conference with 33 saves and has allowed 11 goals, holding a .750 save percentage.
