HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss and USF renews a football rivalry this weekend after a 20-year hiatus when the Bulls travel to Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium for a Saturday evening clash.
Game time is set for 6 p.m., and can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and audio only through SouthernMiss.com.
Saturday's meeting marks the fifth between the schools with the Golden Eagles holding a 3-1 advantage in the series, including a current two-game winning streak. Southern Miss captured a 27-20 decision at Raymond James Stadium in the last meeting – Oct. 2, 2004.
The first four meetings of this series took place between 2000 and 2004, with the final two coming as Conference USA foes.
This season, Southern Miss enters the weekend having put together a 1-1 record, including a 35-10 decision last weekend at home against Southeastern Louisiana.
Quarterback Tate Rodemaker, who started in his second game for the Golden Eagles, has now thrown for 305 yards over his first two contests on 31-of-51 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Kenyon Clay leads the team on the ground with 82 yards on five carries, while Dreke Clark is second in rushing with 37 yards on 19 carries.
On the strength of a five catch, 100-yard performance last weekend, Larry Simmons leads the receiving corps with 109 yards overall, while tight end Kyirin Heath now has five catches for 82 yards and a score on the season along with position mate Justyn Reid with a pair of catches for 62 yards.
The defense has been led by graduate student Dylan Lawrence, who led the team in tackles a year ago. This season, he is tops again in stops with 13 through a pair of games to go along with two interceptions, one in each of his two games in 2024. His pick last week was returned 63 yards for his first career touchdown.
USF comes into the game having split its first two contests. After defeating Bethune-Cookman at home in the opener 48-3, the Bulls gave Alabama everything they wanted last weekend for three quarters before the Crimson Tide pulled away for a 42-16 decision.
The Bulls are lead by quarterback Byrum Brown who has thrown for 255 yards and rushed for another 182.
