Kobi Albert Earns Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week Honors

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss redshirt junior Kobi Albert (Birmingham, Ala.) earned the Sun Belt Conference initial Defensive Player of the Week award for the 2026 season Monday for his play in the Golden Eagles 49-3 win over Alcorn State last Saturday.
While only recording one tackle on the day, Albert collected three interceptions for the Golden Eagles in his program debut. The interception total ties for the second-most in school history with five others in the 110-year history of the program, one of which was Josh Moten, who did it last season at Arkansas State (11/8).
Albert's first interception came on the opening drive of the game, while his second came in the second quarter deep in the Golden Eagle end, thwarting a Alcorn State scoring drive. His final interception came on the Braves' first possession of the second half.
He and his defensive teammates helped limit the Braves to 223 total offensive yards, the fewest allowed by a Golden Eagle defense since holding Grambling State to 182 in 2021. It also marked the first time Southern Miss has not allowed a touchdown in a game since that Grambling contest.
The award was the first weekly nod for Albert and the first league defensive honor for the Golden Eagles since Moten won it for his play against Arkansas State last season.
