HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Slade Wilks celebrated senior day by delivering a go-ahead, run-scoring double in the fifth inning as Southern Miss closed out the regular season with a 5-3 Sun Belt Conference victory over Texas State Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (37-18) enjoyed their 10th win over their last 11 games while also giving first-year coach Christian Ostrander the most victories by a Southern Miss first-year head coach. Southern Miss will next play Wednesday as the No. 2 seed in its opening game of the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Tournament to be held at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala.
The win also clinched the Golden Eagles' seventh league series victory of the year, including the final three to conclude the regular season.
The Golden Eagles banged out nine hits in the game, including a pair from Ozzie Pratt and one from Wilks. Pratt extended his streak to his season-best 13 games, while Wilks saw his balloon to 28 games, which is tied for third best in school history with Kevin Young (1990).
With Southern Miss down 2-1 in the fifth, Gabe Broadus drew a one-walk. Broadus advanced to third after stealing a base and the Bobcat catcher's throw banged off the helmet of Pratt and ricocheted over to the shortstop area. Pratt then extended his hitting streak with a single to right to tie the game. Wilks followed with a double to center which gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Pratt doubled in another run in the seventh to increase the advantage, before Matthew Russo homered to right in the eighth – a solo shot for his sixth of the year – to conclude the Golden Eagle scoring.
Texas State had jumped out to an early advantage with a second-inning RBI single from Daylan Pena. After the Golden Eagles tied the game in the third on a Dalton McIntyre run-scoring ground out, August Ramirez gave the visitors their final lead at 2-1 with a solo shot to center for his 10th of the year.
Cade Manning drove in the final Texas State run in the ninth on a run-scoring single.
Kros Sivley threw four scoreless innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit with a walk and three strikeouts to earn the victory to improve to 4-5. Colby Allen gave up an unearned run in the ninth but still managed to earn his sixth save of the year by covering the final inning.
Texas State reliever Rhett McCaffety gave up two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-1.
Texas State (27-29 13-17) ended their season with the loss.
