The Golden Eagles (21-14 overall, 8-6 Sun Belt) look to salvage the final game of the series, which is set for Sunday, at 12 noon CT.
Michael Maginnis and Brennan Hudson each homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Panthers (18-16 overall, 9-5 in the Sun Belt) as they collected 19 hits in the contest.
The Golden Eagles tied a season-high for homers with five as Carson Paetow belted a three-run shot in the first for his seventh of the year. It was one of only two leads for the visitors in the contest. The other four long balls were solo shots including back-to-back shots in the second from Nick Monistere and Tucker Stockman as they connected on their sixth and third round-trippers, respectively.
A sacrifice fly by Ozzie Pratt in the fourth accounted for a run, before Davis Gillespie led off the fifth with a solo shot to left center for his fifth of 2024. A solo homer by Matthew Russo in the seventh, his second of the year and of the series, completed the Golden Eagle scoring.
Southern Miss starter Billy Oldham (4-1) lost his first start of the season, as he allowed nine runs on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.
GSU reliever Brady Jones improved to 3-0 with the victory, as he limited the Golden Eagles to two runs on three hits over 3 1/3 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Golden Eagle center fielder Dalton McIntyre had a season-best tying hitting streak snapped at 10 games.
It was the second-straight day the game was decided by the 10-run rule.
