Beach Volleyball Visits Birmingham for UAB Beach Bash

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss beach volleyball makes its way up I-59 for three matches in Birmingham as part of the UAB Beach Bash. The Golden Eagles take on Mercer, North Alabama and UAB, all on Saturday, April 13, at UAB's UAB Beach Volleyball Courts.

Southern Miss opens tournament play against Sun Belt opponent Mercer. The meeting marks the third time the two SBC foes will face off this season with the two splitting their prior matches.

Mercer is currently 16-14 overall and 2-4 in Sun Belt play after finishing 1-3 at South Carolina's Palmetto Invitational last weekend. Fifth-year head coach Josh Marsh has already posted his most wins in a season at Mercer with 16 this year. Marsh holds a 43-93 overall record as the Bears' head coach.

Southern Miss meets North Alabama for the first time in program history. The Lions are receiving votes in this week's AVCA poll after a 1-4 finish at last week's Unconquered Invitational in Tallahassee. Their five matches all came against programs receiving votes in the AVCA poll, including four within the top 20. UNA knocked off No. 20 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and came close against No. 16 Florida Atlantic.

Second-year head coach Kaleb VanDePerre has built the Lions into a formidable program in his second year. North Alabama finished last season 20-16 and are already 15-9 in 2024. VanDePerre is 35-25 in Florence.

The day concludes with a match against old C-USA foe and host UAB, who is also receiving votes in this week's AVCA poll. Southern Miss is 1-7 all-time against UAB and is in the midst of a four-game skid against the Blazers. UAB defeated Southern Miss 4-1 earlier this season at Southeastern's Sugar Beach Bash. The Blazers are 13-11 in 2024 and 1-3 in C-USA after a 1-3 weekend at Florida State's Unconquered Invitational.

First-year head coach Delaney Clesen takes over for former head coach Terri Del Conte and has UAB out to 13 wins so far, needing one more win to mark the third-most in a single season.

Southern Miss wraps up the regular season next weekend at Tulane's NOLA Classic. The Golden Eagles travel to Elmwood for three matches on Friday, April 19.
