HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team begins a stretch Tuesday at Southeastern Louisiana in which they play the first of four-straight road games and eight of the next nine away from Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Â
The game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network or through SouthernMiss.com.
Â
The Golden Eagles (18-10) won their 10th Sun Belt Conference series in their 13-series history by defeating Troy 2-1 last weekend at Pete Taylor Park. After a 10-run rule, 14-4 seven-inning victory last Thursday for the home team, the Golden Eagles and Trojans traded leads three times over the final two innings before Southern Miss fell 9-8. Dalton McIntyre broke open a tie game in the finale with an RBI single in the seventh with another run coming home on an error on the same play to give Southern Miss a 5-3 series-clinching win.
Â
As for the Lions (18-10), they dropped two of three games to Houston Christian at home in Southland Conference play.
Â
Senior Golden Eagle right-hander Cole Boswell is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season against the Lions. He has appeared in five games this spring and has no record with a 7.27 ERA. He has thrown 8 2/3 innings and allowed seven hits, nine walks and fanned 12. Opponents are hitting .226 against him this season. His first start came against Nicholls (2/27) at Shuckers Ballpark in Biloxi, which was his best outing of the year as he limited the Colonels to a hit and a walk with two strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings. He also started against Mississippi State (3/5), Alabama (3/12) and Ole Miss (3/19) at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
Â
Sophomore Nick Monistere might be the hottest Golden Eagle heading into the SLU contest as he hit safely in all four games last week, posting a .500 average (7x14) with three doubles, a home run and a team-best seven RBI during the period. He broke open a 2-2 game against Tulane with a fifth-inning, two-run bloop double that proved to be the game winner in his only game that he did not have multiple hits for the week.
Â
Junior right fielder Carson Paetow has also enjoyed a solid stretch over the last seven games by batting .414 (12x29) with a pair of doubles, two home runs and six RBI over that span. His seven-game hitting streak is his longest of the season as he has multi-hit games four times during this stretch.
Â
Southern Miss plated runs in the first inning twice over the weekend and has now scored 37 of its 181 runs in the opening frame this season, good for 20.4 percent of its scoring production. The Golden Eagles have scored in the opening inning in 14 of 28 games this season and are 11-3 in those contests.
Â
In this series, the Golden Eagles lead 79-48 over the Lions, including, 33-29 in Hammond, having won the last seven matchups there.
Â
Following the SLU contest, the Golden Eagles travel to Mobile, Ala., this weekend to face South Alabama. The series gets underway with a 6:30 p.m., contest Friday.
