RUSTON, La. – Southern Miss scored eight unanswered runs over the final three innings to defeat Louisiana Tech 11-3 Saturday afternoon at Pat Patterson Park/J.C. Love Field to win the series over the Bulldogs.
The Golden Eagles (10-5) won for the second-straight time, while sending the Bulldogs (12-3) to their third consecutive loss. Southern Miss and LA Tech finish the series with a 1 p.m., contest Sunday.
Dalton McIntyre led the Golden Eagles with four hits, while Ozzie Pratt added a couple for the visitors.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the seventh, Pratt opened the frame with a single. After a walk to McIntyre, the two runners were moved up a base with a Nick Monistere sacrifice bunt. Slade Wilks then hit a comebacker to relief pitcher Ethan Bates, who threw wild of home plate to allow both Pratt and McIntyre to score and give the visitors a 5-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles then added a season-high six runs in the ninth as they sent 11 batters to the plate. The inning's scoring started with a run-scoring double from Wilks. Matthew Russo then knocked in the second run with a single of his own, before Lawson Odom collected a bases-clearing double down the left field line and McIntyre knocked in the final run with an RBI single of his own.
LA Tech took the early advantage by scoring the game's first run off Golden Eagle starter Billy Oldham. Kasten Furr led off the first with a double. After a strikeout, McIntyre dropped a ball in center hit by Dalton Davis to give the home squad a 1-0 advantage.
The game remained that way until the fifth when Southern Miss tallied three runs. With two outs and a runner at second, Pratt sliced a ball past the centerfielder to tie the game with a double. McIntrye drove him home a batter later on a single through the left side, before Billy Butler earned an RBI with a bases loaded walk to complete the scoring for the frame.
The Bulldogs, though, tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Cole McConnell.
Oldham gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over six innings of work to collect the win and improve to 3-0.
Sam Brodersen, the third of six LA Tech pitchers, suffered the loss and fell to 2-1 by allowing a pair of unearned runs over 1 2/3 innings with a hit, two walks and two strikeouts.
