Louisiana Tech Uses Eight-Run Inning to Take Final Game of Series over Southern Miss

The Golden Eagles (10-6) had a two-game winning streak snapped, while the Bulldogs (13-3) won for the first time in four games.
Both Cole McConnell and Ethan Bates drove in five runs as LA Tech collected 15 hits and took advantage of a season-high 14 Golden Eagle walks and five hit by pitches.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead with a solo run in the first. After a groundout to first to open the game, Nick Monistere doubled to right before Slade Wilks laced the first pitch he saw for a single through the right side. McConnell tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot to center.
Ozzie Pratt gave the Eagles a 5-1 advantage in the second with a grand slam, his first homer of the year, but that lead was short-lived as Tech cut the gap to one run with three runs in the third and then took the lead with eight runs in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored on five hits with three walks and three hit batsmen as they sent 14 men to the plate in the inning.
LA Tech then added two-run innings in the fifth, sixth and eighth to complete their scoring.
The Golden Eagles added four runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Billy Butler, an RBI double from Carson Paetow and a two-run single from Davis Gillespie. Southern Miss added two more runs in the eighth on a two-run single from Seth Smith.
JW Armistead, the second of 12 Southern Miss pitchers, allowed two runs on a hit and a hit batsman over a third of an inning to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Reliever Jacob Havern allowed four runs on six hits over 1 1/3 innings to earn the win.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they entertain Alabama at home in a 6 p.m. contest.
