PEARL, Miss. – Dakota Jordan collected an opposite field home run in the top of the seventh to break up a tie score and lead Mississippi State to a 5-4 victory over Southern Miss Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.
The Golden Eagles (8-5) dropped their second-straight contest, while the Bulldogs (9-4) won for the sixth consecutive game.
With the game tied at 4-4, Jordan gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with a two-out, first pitch home run to right center into the Golden Eagle bullpen off Kros Sivley.
The Golden Eagles had jumped out early with four runs in the first inning. After a strikeout to open the frame, Nick Monistere singled up the middle. A stolen base and a groundout to second moved Monistere to third before scoring on a wild pitch.
Billy Butler then followed with his second homer of the season, a solo shot to straightway center, to make the score 2-0. It was the first Southern Miss home run at Trustmark Park since April 5, 2022, when Danny Lynch hit a three-run homer in a come-from-behind victory over Ole Miss.
The next two batters, Carson Paetow and Ozzie Pratt, each walked and then went to second and third on a MSU passed ball. Seth Smith then singled home both runners with a hit through the left side of the infield.
The Bulldogs got on the board with a pair of runs in the second. After a single and walk to open the inning, reliever Colby Allen came in from starter Cole Boswell and got a popout to second for the first out. David Mershon then doubled down the left field line to drive in the first run, before the Bulldogs got another one on a groundout by Jordan.
The game was delayed for 46 minutes at the start of the fifth inning. When the game resumed, the Bulldogs tied the game with two runs. After a strikeout, Allen hit a pair of batters. A single by Jordan knocked in one run before another groundout to first by Hunter Hines plated the tying run.
Tyson Hardin, the fourth of six Bulldog pitchers, gave up no runs on a hit and a walk with a strikeout to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Sivley suffered the loss by allowing a run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings and fell to 0-2. Brooks Auger faced three batters in the ninth, which included a strikeout, to earn his first save.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they travel to Ruston to face Louisiana Tech in a three-game series. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
