BATON ROUGE, La. – Golden Eagle beach volleyball moves to 3-3 on the year after splitting two matches on the opening day of LSU's Tiger Beach Challenge. Southern Miss defeated Houston Christian 4-1 and ended the day with a 5-0 loss to Tulane.
Southern Miss (3-3, 1-0 Sun Belt) opened the day with a 9 a.m. match against Houston Christian. The Golden Eagles were six combined points away from taking the sweep over the Huskies but moved to 3-2 on the year after a 4-1 win.
Southern Miss won in straight sets on courts one, four and five to secure the win. Madison Cassidy and Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou won in three sets to take Southern Miss' fourth point of the day.
Tulane won in straight sets over the Golden Eagles to drop Southern Miss back to 3-3 on the year. Ola Chudzik and Sarah Murczek gave the Green Wave's top flight everything they could handle in a two-set decision. Tulane's No. 1s won in extras 26-24 and 23-21. Elsewhere, the Golden Eagles were just barely unable to keep pace with the Green Wave, who were receiving votes in the most-recent AVCA Coaches poll.
