
Southern Miss Holds off Late Georgia Southern Rally for Fourth Straight Win

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern mounted a comeback in the third quarter, taking the lead late in the quarter before Southern Miss was able to take it back with five minutes left in the game. The Lady Eagles sat on their lead for the final five minutes and emerged from the Hanner Fieldhouse with a 62-54 win. The win marked Southern Miss' fourth-straight win – the best in the Sun Belt Conference.
Georgia Southern (13-11, 3-9 Sun Belt) won the opening tipoff but struggled from there. The Lady Eagles scored eight of the game's first 10 points and entered the first media timeout with a 12-6 lead. Southern Miss (13-9, 6-6 Sun Belt) pressed on, leading by 10 after the first quarter.
The Eagles from Statesboro cut the lead to four later in the second quarter but were unable to make any more progress against Southern Miss. Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) scored nine of her 25 points on the night in the second quarter to hold off the Eagles. Georgia Southern, though, did lead the second quarter 18-16.
Georgia Southern came out of the half on fire, winning the third quarter 20-12 over Southern Miss thanks to a 6-2 run out of the locker rooms. Southern Miss shot just 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) during the third quarter which helped GS take its first lead of the day with 2:20 left in the quarter.
Southern Miss trailed up until the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter before a Noelani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y.) layup gave Southern Miss a 52-51 lead. The New York native scored 13 on the night – her most since Jan. 18. The Lady Eagles outscored Georgia Southern 10-3 down the stretch to end the day.
Davis led all scorers with 25 points and made up a third of a trio of Lady Eagles to finish with double-figure scoring efforts. The other two were Cornfield with 13 and Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.) with 10.
