
First Sun Belt Win in Program History Highlights Beach Volleyball’s Final Day at Stetson Spring Fling

DELAND, Fla. – Southern Miss split its final day at the Stetson Spring Fling with a 5-0 loss to No. 16 Stetson and a historical 3-2 win over Mercer to move to 2-2 on the year.
The Golden Eagles (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) opened the day against undefeated and nationally-ranked Stetson, falling 5-0 to the Hatters on their home court. Southern Miss' fourth pair of Ashlyn Rough and Dylan Russell came close to taking a point in favor of the Golden Eagles but ultimately fell in three sets. Ola Chudzik and Sarah Murczek suffered their first loss on the year at Southern Miss' top flight, falling 24-22 and 21-11 to the Hatters.
In the second Saturday match, Southern Miss edged Mercer to collect the program's first Sun Belt Conference win. Wiio Meinheit and Morgan Perry opened the match with a two-set loss to the Bears with Rough/Russell collecting Southern Miss' first point on the day in two sets.
Laurel Dennis and Sadie McAda finished 21-14 and 21-17 to take a 2-1 advantage for Southern Miss. Chudzik/Murczek fell in three tight sets, 17-21, 21-16 and 17-15 in the rubber set. Tied 2-2, the attention of the crowd shifted to the third pairing. Madison Cassidy and Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou paired at the third position and won their first set 21-14 before dropping set two 18-21. In the penultimate set, Cassidy/Papakyriakou held on to a 15-12 decision to seal the dual and the match for Southern Miss.

Southern Miss moves on to the two-day Tiger Beach Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. The Golden Eagles open competition on Saturday, March 2, against Houston Christian at 9 a.m. and take on Tulane at 2 p.m. The tournament closes with a morning meeting with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and an afternoon match against Central Arkansas.
