HATTISBURG, Miss. – Two Missouri State pitchers limited Southern Miss to five hits and the Bears managed to capture a 3-1 baseball victory over the Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (5-2) saw a three-game current winning streak along with a four-gamer against the Bears snapped in the contest. The series concludes with 1 p.m., contest Sunday. The game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead in the second inning with a solo run. Nick Monistere, who led the Golden Eagles with a pair of hits, was hit by a pitch to open the frame. After a strikeout and a wild pitch to move Monistere to second, Seth Smith rolled one down to third for an infield single to put runners on the corners. Lawson Odom then flied one to right for a sacrifice fly.
An RBI single by Nick Rodriguez for MSU in the third tied the game at 1-1, before the Bears (4-2) took the lead for good with a bases loaded walk by Jahlani Rogers in the fifth. Zack Stewart then homered an inning later, his second of the series and his second of the year, for a solo shot to complete the scoring.
Brandt Thompson limited the Golden Eagles to a run on five hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 1-0. Hunter Day followed with four shutout frames and limited the home squad to two walks and three strikeouts to garner his second save.
Billy Oldham lasted four innings for Southern Miss, allowing a run on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts for a no decision. It was Ben Riley Flowers, though, that suffered the loss by giving up a single and a walk for his only two batters to open the fifth, as he fell to 0-1.
Golden Eagle reliever Colby Allen then threw five innings down the stretch and gave up just one run on a hit with two walks and five strikeouts. For the sixth time in seven games in 2024, the Southern Miss pitching staff registered double-digit strikeouts with 10.
