Baseball Wins Marist Series with 10-5 Saturday Victory

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ozzie Pratt and Nick Monistere each drove in a pair of runs and Billy Oldham threw six strong innings as Southern Miss defeated Marist 10-5 for the second-straight day Saturday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) and Red Foxes (0-2) complete the series with a 1 p.m., contest. The game can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network.
After giving up an opening run on an RBI double by Ethan Conrad, the Golden Eagles responded with three runs in their half of the frame. After back-to-back one-out singles by Gabe Broadus and Slade Wilks, Monistere drove in his first run with a sacrifice fly, before Pratt knocked in a run with a double and Davis Gillespie completed the scoring with an RBI single.
Southern Miss extended the lead on a fielder's choice in the fourth, but a solo home run in the top of the fifth by Colin Mackle cut the gap to 4-2.
Again, the Golden Eagles answered, getting a solo run in the bottom of the fifth on a Nolan Tucker sacrifice fly before breaking open the game with four more runs in the sixth. Southern Miss scored the first two runs on bases loaded walks by Monistere and Pratt. Matthew Russo then got a sacrifice fly to center which was dropped, but still deep enough to score a run on the play before a wild pitch completed the scoring to make the score 9-2.
Southern Miss added a final tally in the seventh on a Wilks' RBI fielder's choice, before the Red Foxes tallied three in the ninth – two coming in a Bayram Hot single – to cut the final gap.
Oldham allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts to earn the victory. Freshman McCarty English then threw two scoreless frames, before Jake Cook pitched the ninth.
Marist starter Riley Orr suffered the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
A win in the finale for the Golden Eagles would give them their 13th three-game sweep since the start of the 2022 season.
