HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Marist scored a pair of runs in a couple early innings and then held Southern Miss off late to salvage the final game of the three-game set, 6-3, Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) return to action with a 4 p.m., contest Monday against Air Force, who dropped two of three games at Mississippi State over the weekend. The game can be seen on ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
For the second-straight day, Marist scored in the opening inning. After Lewis Rodriguez singled to open the game off Kros Sivley, Johnny Decker then tripled to right to plate the game's first run. A groundout next by Bayram Hot knocked in Decker to make the score 2-0.
Southern Miss got an early run in the first as well, as Carson Paetow led off the Golden Eagle half of the inning with a triple and later scored on a Gabe Broadus groundout.
A two-run single in the third by Marco Ali extended the Marist lead to 4-1 and the Red Foxes added a solo run in the seventh on a Colin Mackle RBI single, as well as on a wild pitch in the ninth.
Catcher Tucker Stockman cut into the Red Foxes' lead with the team's first home run of the year, a solo shot to lead of the fourth to cut the gap to 4-2.
A RBI single from Broadus in the seventh closed the gap again to two runs at 5-3, but the Golden Eagles would leave two runners stranded in the seventh and the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings to leave a season-high 12 stranded for the game.
Will Taylor pitched 5 2/3 innings for Marist and allowed two runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts to garner the victory. After a strong 2 1/3 relief effort from Andrew Fierro, Caleb Kempler got the final two outs to garner the save.
Sivley, the first of four Southern Miss hurlers, gave up four runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss. The four Golden Eagle pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and just one walk.
Southern Miss was also outhit in the game 11-4.
