Southern Miss Hosts Memphis in Annual Lung Cancer Awareness Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball is hosting its annual Lung Cancer Awareness game at against old Conference USA rival Memphis. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum where fans are encouraged to wear white to support the fight against lung cancer.

Starting Five
1) Southern Miss is looking to extend a 10-game nonconference unbeaten streak at Reed Green Coliseum to 11 games. Southern Miss is undefeated at home this season and has not lost an out-of-conference competition since Dec. 11, 2022.
2) Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) is slowly but surely moving up the all-time scoring charts. She enters tomorrow's contest with 1,333 career points to her name. She is leading the Lady Eagles with 15.3 points per game. She moved into the top 10 all-time in field goals made against Mississippi Valley State and currently owns 563 field goals in her career.
3) Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) scored a career-high 24 points at UAB (Dec. 1) and is averaging 11.9 points per game – the highest average of her four-year career. She made her fourth start of the season against Mississippi Valley State after coming off the bench in the first five games.
4) Southern Miss meets Memphis for the 58th time in program history and for the first time at Reed Green Coliseum since Feb. 21, 2013. Memphis leads the all-time series 32-25 since Southern Miss' first official season in 1975-76.
5) Head coach Joye Lee-McNelis is back for her 21st season at the helm of Lady Eagle Basketball. She sports a 332-293 record at Southern Miss and 561-449 record overall. This will be her 21st game against Memphis in her career. The former Memphis head coach from 1991-2004, McNelis is 18-17 as a head coach in the Southern Miss-Memphis series.
About the Tigers
Memphis enters the game with a 2-5 overall record and is winless away from the Elma Roane Fieldhouse so far this year with three of its five losses coming on the road. In their last game, the Tigers fell at East Tennessee State 78-71 with Elauna Eaton scoring 20 and Layken Cox following her with 18.
The Tigers' leading scorer on the season is Tilly Boler, who has started in all seven games and is averaging 15.6 points per game. She leads a group of four Tigers who average double-figures on the year with Eaton, Hannah Riddick and Alasia Smith all notching in with 10+ points per game. However, Riddick, who started the first four games, has been out with an injury and is not expected to play.
The Memphis Series
Memphis upset (RV) Southern Miss last season on Dec. 10 in Memphis to claim its 32nd win in the series history. This will be the first time Memphis enters Reed Green Coliseum since Feb. 21, 2013.
The series went dormant from 2013-2023 after Memphis left Conference USA for the American Athletic Conference at the end of the 2012-13 season. Southern Miss renewed the series last year at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Southern Miss will enjoy a long break before heading to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State on Friday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is scheduled for noon at the Great Southern Bank Arena.
Celebrating 50 Seasons of Southern Miss Women's Basketball
The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season. Since then, the Lady Eagles have laid out five decades of excellence on and off the court. To celebrate this golden jubilee, Southern Miss women's basketball will host its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, January 18, against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum.
