Sutton Leads Lady Eagles to Victory Over Memphis

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Bre Sutton finished one point shy of her career high with 18 points while recording five rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a standout performance on both ends of the floor. Sutton led a group of four double-figure Lady Eagle scorers as Southern Miss (4-6) ran Memphis (4-6) off the floor en route to an 82-69 final at Reed Green Coliseum on Sunday.
In the first meeting in the series in nearly 12 years, Memphis struck first and easily took a 10-2 lead just three minutes into the contest. Bre Sutton (New Orleans, La.) intercepted a Memphis pass and then dished it to Mikaylah Manley (Lake Charles, La.) to stop the Tigers' early run.
Sutton's play sparked a 21-6 finish in the first quarter by Southern Miss. She finished 5-of-6 from the floor and already had double-figures and two rebounds, assists and steals early on. Her layup with 2:36 left in the frame gave Southern Miss its first lead of the day – one the Lady Eagles never looked back on.
The Lady Eagles led 45-35 at the half after shooting 19-of-36 (52.8 percent) from the floor. The difference in the first half, and in the game, was Southern Miss' ability to force Memphis into turnovers. The Tigers committed 13 first half turnovers which turned into 22 Southern Miss points.
Southern Miss came out of the locker room still on fire, hitting back-to-back three-point field goals from Trinity Rowe (Pikeville, Ky.) and Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) to force Memphis into a timeout. The Lady Eagles took their largest lead of the day after Je'Mya Evans followed through in the paint for a second chance layup.
Pace slowed in the final frame compared to the hot-shooting first three quarters. Southern Miss scored just 13 but did hold Memphis to a 33 percent mark from the floor. Southern Miss closed out the game as four Lady Eagles made their way into double-figures.
Sutton led Southern Miss with 18 points with Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.), Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) and Rowe all scoring in double-figures. Southern Miss' 82 points are the most since an 87-point outburst against Blue Mountain Christian earlier this season. The win over Memphis also keeps Southern Miss undefeated at Reed Green Coliseum this season, moving to 4-0.

Celebrating 50 Seasons of Southern Miss Women's Basketball
The 2024-25 season of Southern Miss Lady Eagle Basketball marks a major milestone for the program and for The University of Southern Mississippi as the women's basketball program celebrates its 50th season of competition. Following the adoption of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Southern Miss added women's basketball and women's tennis as official athletic programs beginning in the 1975-76 season. Since then, the Lady Eagles have laid out five decades of excellence on and off the court. To celebrate this golden jubilee, Southern Miss women's basketball will host its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion on Saturday, January 18, against South Alabama at Reed Green Coliseum.
