HATTIESBURG, Miss.  – Southern Miss women's basketball tips off the new season on Monday, Nov. 2, against Mississippi Christian in Reed Green Coliseum at 11 a.m. The Lady Eagles will also play host to over 3,000 local elementary and middle school students as part of Education Day.
Â
Southern Miss got an extended look at the new-look roster in its exhibition game against East Texas Baptist. The Lady Eagles raced out to a 46-24 lead at halftime and continued to pull away in the second half for an 89-45 win. The defense of the Black and Gold made its presence felt in the second and fourth periods, holding ETBU to eight points in each quarter.
Â
Newcomer Kennedy Langham quickly found her footing in the new lineup, leading all scorers in the game with 16 points. Langham went perfect from the three-point line on 4-for-4 shooting and chipped in a team-high four assists. Hayleigh Breland joined in double-figure scoring with 14 points and added four steals and three assists.
Â
Whitney Hart rounded out the scoring for the Black and Gold in the exhibition game with ten points and led the efforts at the glass, pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
Â
Southern Miss has been excellent not just in season openers but also in openers at home, as the Lady Eagles are 36-17 all-time in season openers and are 41-10 in openers at home. The Black and Gold have won 12 straight home openers, with the last defeat coming in November 2012.
Â
Mississippi Christian enters the 2026-27 season off the back of a 9-18 season last year under Coach Rachel Travis in her first season with the Choctaws. Coach Travis finished with an 8-14 record in the Gulf South Conference to end the year ninth in the GSC standings and just missing out on a berth to the conference tournament by one spot.Â
Â
The Choctaws return five players from last season, while adding 14 new players, featuring a host of transfers and three freshmen. Taleah Anderson is the team's top scorer back after averaging 2.1 points per game in 25 appearances.
