HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss Soccer (1-6-2, 0-2-2 Sun Belt) fought Coastal Carolina (5-4-4, 1-1-2 Sun Belt) to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at the Marshall Bell Complex, earning a point in the conference from the result.
While the Golden Eagles started with an early deficit due to Eleanor Ashton's goal in the fourth minute on a one-on-one situation with Southern Miss goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni, the Golden Eagles responded 15 minutes later with an equalizer.
Freshman Raquelle Mitchell, who was stopped on a previous play by Coastal Carolina's keeper Aris Lamanna, found the back of the net the second time on a breakaway attack from an intercepted pass. Mitchell fired past the defenders and sunk a right-footer into the bottom corner of the net to even the score in the 19th minute.
Mitchell, who opened the season and her collegiate career with a historic brace, leads the team with three goals on the season.
As a team, Southern Miss controlled the attack, outshooting the Chanticleers 15-5 and setting up a season-high 11 corner kicks. Alice Williamson led the team with five shots.
Lamanna saved three shots on target from Williamson, Mitchell and Adaira Nakano to help prevent a game-winning goal. A potential game-winning goal from freshman Elizabeth Corrigan was also called back due to a handball early in the second half.
Southern Miss goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni made her third consecutive start for the Golden Eagles, saving two shots in the team's effort.
All three of Southern Miss' goals in conference play this season have been scored in the first half, and six of the team's eight goals this season have come before the break.
