STATESBORO, Ga.-Southern Miss Soccer (3-6-5, 2-2-5 Sun Belt) picked up a conference point with its fifth draw of the season, ending with a 2-2 result on the road at Georgia Southern (6-10-1, 3-5-1 Sun Belt) Sunday.
While the Golden Eagles held a two-goal advantage at the break, Georgia Southern rallied with two goals of their own in the second period to avoid a loss.Â
Junior Taylor Stewart enjoyed a career day, scoring her first career goal on the way to registering a brace. Freshman Raquelle Mitchell was instrumental in setting up both plays, recording a career-high two assists.Â
Stewart scored her first goal in the 14th minute as Mitchell sent a cross in the box, which the junior forward sent into the bottom right of the goal from a strike off of her right foot.
The Hattiesburg, Miss. native struck again seven minutes later as Mitchell led the ball down the field to complete her brace.Â
With her second goal of the match, Stewart became the fifth Golden Eagle to score a brace this season. Shaelynn Quick and Rebeka Vega scored two goals apiece earlier this week in Southern Miss' 4-1 victory versus Louisiana.
Georgia Southern flipped the script in the second half, coming out of the break quickly with a strike in the 48th minute from Kyleigh Drew.
The Eagles continued their attack, scoring the equalizer from a shot by Claire Casey, assisted by Maya Zovko, in the 62nd minute.Â
Georgia Southern goalkeeper Quinn Wilson, who came in for starter Katie Oakley in the second period, thwarted Southern Miss' attack with five saves.
As Southern Miss was unable to replicate their success on the offensive end in the first half, Georgia Southern gained momentum, outshooting the Golden Eagles 9-5 in the second half. Georgia Southern outshot the Golden Eagles 16-14, ending Southern Miss' streak of outshooting opponents through five consecutive matches, the longest streak for the program since 2021.
Southern Miss continued its scoring streak, having scored 16 goals in conference play and scoring multiple goals in five straight conference games, the longest streak since 2000, when the Golden Eagles scored a total of 15 goals in a span of five consecutive conference matches.
Senior goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni recorded four saves in the match, including a double save in the first half.
Southern Miss sits at seventh place in the conference with 11 conference points, but have yet to clinch a spot in the tournament with three teams trailing the Golden Eagles by three points or less.
