For the third consecutive season, Southern Miss has a chance to earn their spot in the conference tournament on the last day of the regular season. The Golden Eagles punched their ticket to the Sun Belt Tournament with a final 1-0 win against Louisiana in 2022 and a 3-3 draw on the road at Texas State last season.
Southern Miss stands as the eighth seed with 11 conference points, currently placed among the eight teams set to advance to the Sun Belt Tournament starting next weekend in Foley, Ala.Â
However, the Golden Eagles have yet to clinch their spot in the tournament with Georgia Southern and ULM still eligible to move up the standings following the result of Thursday's Sun Belt action.Â
These are the possible paths for Southern Miss to reach the tournament:
Southern Miss clinches spot in tournament with win at ULM
-OR-
Southern Miss clinches spot in tournament with tie AND Georgia Southern loss/tie at Texas State
Southern Miss would be eliminated from contention for the conference tournament with a loss at ULM, which would have both teams tied at 11 points. Given the conference's head-to-head competition tiebreaker, ULM would advance in the event of a Southern Miss loss.
The Golden Eagles have positioned themselves into contention for the tournament riding a six-match unbeaten streak that began with three straight draws, a program record for consecutive ties.Â
Southern Miss then picked up back-to-back wins to conclude their home slate with a 2-0 win versus Troy and a 4-1 victory against Louisiana last week.Â
The Golden Eagles picked up another conference point in their fifth draw this season Sunday on the road at Georgia Southern, which ended in a 2-2 result.
Junior Taylor Stewart enjoyed a career day, scoring her first career goal on the way to also registering her first brace. Stewart scored both of the team's goals on plays that were set up by freshman Raquelle Mitchell, who tallied a total of three assists during the week.
Now, Southern Miss faces a ULM Warhawks team that has endured a four-game losing streak. ULM lost 3-1 at South Alabama Sunday. The Warhawks have been outscored 12-3 during the stretch.
