MONROE, La.-Southern Miss Soccer (3-7-5, 2-3-5 Sun Belt) fell 3-0 at ULM (9-8-2, 3-5-2 Sun Belt) Thursday morning, eliminating the Golden Eagles from contention for the final spot of the Sun Belt Tournament.Â
The Warhawks snapped its four-game losing skid, while also ending Southern Miss' six-game unbeaten streak, which was the second longest in the conference behind James Madison's ten-game streak.
With the loss, Southern Miss will miss a conference tournament for the first time since 2019, ending a streak of five consecutive appearances, including both Sun Belt Tournaments since joining the conference. ULM's victory places them in contention for the eighth seed in the tournament, depending on a Georgia Southern loss to Texas State on Thursday evening.
The Warhawks powered ahead early in the match with two goals in the first half. ULM struck first in the 11th minute off of a set piece from the corner, as Mara Grutkamp connected with Beth Strutton, who scored with a header. Grutkamp contributed again seven minutes later, tallying her second assist on a pass to Guiulia Franco for another goal.
ULM continued to apply pressure after the break, with Skylar Blaise scoring five minutes into the second half on an assist from Ally Richardson, who delivered a cross into the box for the Warhawks' third and final goal of the game.
Meanwhile, Warhawks freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Handy posted her sixth shutout of the season, halting Southern Miss' scoring opportunities with six saves.Â
Handy and ULM's defense put an end to Southern Miss' scoring streak, during which the Golden Eagles had scored multiple goals in five consecutive conference games, tying the program's longest streak set in 2000.
The match marked the first time Southern Miss had been shutout in conference play since Sept. 29 in a 1-0 loss at home to Texas State. The Golden Eagles finished conference play with 16 goals scored, the second most in the Sun Belt this season.
Southern Miss senior goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni tied a season-high with six saves in her 11th start of the season.Â
Taylor Stewart, Alice Williamson, Chloe Taylor and Ishpreen Marwah led the Golden Eagles with two shots apiece.
