NORFOLK, Va. – A cold start in the first quarter ultimately spelled Southern Miss' doom in a 68-62 loss to Old Dominion. ODU outscored the Lady Eagles 12-4 in the first as Southern Miss shot 2-of-15 from the floor in the opening quarter.
Old Dominion (10-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) led by as many as 20 points halfway through the second quarter before Southern Miss (7-6, 0-3 Sun Belt) began to close the gap. The Lady Eagles outscored the Monarchs 16-8 in the final five minutes of the half, cutting the deficit to 12 in favor of ODU.
The Black & Gold exploded out of the half, opening up a 6-0 run to force a timeout from the Monarchs. ODU, though, scored the next four points of the game before a Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) free throw and three-point basket and dish out to Brikayla Gray (Hebron, Miss.) cut the Monarch lead to 38-34. Gray dropped another layup in the paint to make it 38-36.
With 58 seconds left to play, Gray scored her seventh point of the quarter and ninth on the day to tie the game at 40-all, completely erasing Southern Miss' 20-point deficit. The junior then connected on an and-one free throw to give Southern Miss its first lead of the day at 41-40.
At the end of the third quarter, Old Dominion held on to a 44-43 lead. The game remained a back-and-forth affair until for the next five minutes before a Kaye Clark triple gave ODU its final lead of the day. The Monarchs did not surrender the lead for the rest of the game, closing out the final minutes at the charity stripe.
Southern Miss' losing streak extends to six games, the longest since 2019-20. The Lady Eagles are 0-3 in conference and 1-4 in true road games this season. Old Dominion avoided a losing streak after dropping a Thursday contest to Louisiana.
Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) collected her 17th career double-double with a team-best 17 points and 11 boards. The mark is Grayson's fourth double-double game of the season and first since Nov. 25 against Samford.
