James Madison Uses Late Surge to Beat Southern Miss in Back-and-Forth Affair

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Dukes of James Madison used opportune defense and timely scoring to overcome Domonique Davis' 33 points in an 81-76 win at Reed Green Coliseum. The battle of last season's regular season co-champions featured 17 lead changes and 10 ties.
Southern Miss falls to 7-7 on the year and 0-4 in Sun Belt play. James Madison (12-4, 4-0 Sun Belt) picks up its fourth win in Sun Belt play and remains locked in the top spot against Marshall as both teams sit undefeated in conference play.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) poured on 33 points in the losing effort – her fifth career game with 30+ points – to set a new season-high. She was joined by Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) who also set a new season-high with 18 points of her own.
The two squads stood knotted at 16 after the first quarter and did not separate until the final quarter. JMU won the second quarter 18-17 and the third 23-22, holding a 57-55 lead before the final quarter.
In the fourth, Southern Miss and James Madison again dueled on both sides of the court. Davis cut JMU's lead to two with her first bucket of the quarter. She finished with 12 points in the fourth quarter to get to her 33-point final line. Grayson tied things at 61-all with 7:45 to play and a Davis triple gave Southern Miss a 64-61 lead.
The Dukes retook the lead with six minutes to play for just 11 seconds before Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) drilled a long ball to take a 67-65 lead. Southern Miss held that two-point advantage into the media timeout. JMU's Peyton McDaniel scored her 25th point of the evening to tie the game at 67.
With 4:42 left in regulation, Southern Miss looked poised to close out the game and pick up its first Sun Belt win of the season. James Madison, though, had other plans. A missed Lady Eagle field goal turned into a JMU three-pointer. On Southern Miss' next possession, JMU stripped the ball out and hit a fast break layup to take a five-point lead.
A Southern Miss timeout stalled the quick JMU run, but the Lady Eagles were never able to recover the lead. James Madison closed out the game, leading by as many as nine with under a minute to go.
Southern Miss has now lost seven-consecutive games – the most since 2019-20.
UP NEXT
The Lady Eagles stay home for the second of four consecutive home games, this time hosting South Alabama for Sun Belt action. Both the Lady Eagles and Jaguars are looking for their first conference wins of the season. Tipoff from Reed Green Coliseum is set for 2 p.m.
