LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss' losing streak extended to five-straight games as the Lady Eagles fell to 7-5 on the year and 0-2 in Sun Belt Conference play after an 88-71 loss at Coastal Carolina.
The Chanticleers shot 51.8 percent from the floor and jumped on the Lady Eagles quick, leading 29-10 after the first quarter. Coastal Carolina was led by a different player in the first and second halves. In the first half, Makaila Cange scored 16 points – including 13 points in the first quarter – and accounted for the Chanticleers first 10 points of the day. Cange finished the day with 22 points and Coastal's second-leading scorer, Arin Freeman, finished with 21. At the half, Freeman had just three points but scored 18 in the second half.
Coastal Carolina's key to success was in its volume. CCU put up 13 more shots than Southern Miss in the first half, accounting for their larger scoring efforts.
ABOUT OLD DOMINION
The Monarchs enter the weekend 9-3 and 1-1 in the Sun Belt after dropping a Thursday contest to Louisiana. Old Dominion's 66-61 loss to the Ragin' Cajuns extended the Monarchs home losing streak to two.
The Monarchs are ranked 18th in the nation and first in the Sun Belt in scoring defense, giving up just 53.5 points per game. ODU scores just 59.2 of its own points per game and owns an +5.7 scoring margin on the season. Old Dominion is the worst-shooting team in the Sun Belt as its 34.7 percent field goal percentage is dead last in Sun Belt play and 328th in the NCAA.
ODU's 9-3 record comes from the team's ability to force turnovers. Old Dominion forces 20.25 turnovers a game – fourth-best in the Sun Belt and 38th in Division I – and sports a +4.92 turnover margin.
En'Dya Buford is the only Monarch to average double figure scoring with 10.8 points per game. The Monarchs, though, have nine players on their roster with a field goal percentage north of 33.3 percent.
THE OLD DOMINION SERIES
Old Dominion joined Southern Miss in Conference USA for the 2013-14 season and the two teams played nine games as members of C-USA. Southern Miss and Old Dominion met for the 10th time overall and for the first time as Sun Belt Conference members last season. Old Dominion leads the overall series 6-4 and owns a four-game win streak against Southern Miss dating back to 2018.
