Cold Shooting Haunts Lady Eagles in 70-58 Loss to ULM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – ULM made just four more baskets on the day than Southern Miss, but outscored the Lady Eagles 24-6 from behind the arc in a 70-58 Warhawk victory. The Lady Eagles finished the day 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) from three, ultimately spelling the team's doom Saturday afternoon.
"We played very well up until the third quarter," said Joye Lee-McNelis, 20th-year head coach of the Lady Eagles. "In that third quarter, we could not make a bucket. I think we had four points and that gave ULM momentum. It gave them momentum, then we get down and then we just don't fight back like we needed to. It was one of the worst shooting performances we've had in a long time. When we can't shoot the ball, it really affects us in every other aspect of the game."
Southern Miss falls to 9-8 on the season and 2-5 in Sun Belt play after the loss. The Lady Eagles were 21-of-59 (35.6 performance) from the floor overall compared to ULM's (13-5, 5-2 Sun Belt) 25-of-60 (41.7 percent) performance. Prior to today, Southern Miss averaged north of 44 percent from the floor with today's game marking the worst field goal percentage for the Lady Eagles this season.
Monroe was able to make hay behind the line, hitting on eight of their 20 attempts from behind the arc for a 40 percent day. Two Warhawks, Daisha Bradford and Lauren Gross, hit four and three long balls on the day, respectively. Bradford finished 9-of-15 overall and 5-of-5 at the free throw line to finish with 27 points.
Bradford jumped out of the gate hot, helping ULM to a 13-8 lead at end of the first quarter. Southern Miss was able to put together a nine-point run to end the first half, scoring a season-best 26 points in the second quarter to lead the Warhawks 34-32 at the half.
A cold third quarter resulted in just four Lady Eagle points and 13 for the Warhawks. ULM was able to pull away with a dagger three from former Lady Eagle Lauren Gross with 1:35 left to play.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 18 points herself after struggling on the floor, shooting 6-of-20 overall and 0-of-6 from the arc. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Noelani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y.) also finished with double-figure scoring, notching 10 points each.
Grayson fell victim to the whistle, fouling out with four minutes to play in a seven-point game. She played just over 16 minutes, her fewest minutes played in the last 13 games.
