1/25/2024 10:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TROY, Ala. – Southern Miss women's basketball fell 77-70 to the Trojans of Troy on Thursday night. The game was a back-and-forth affair from the jump with the Trojans taking their largest lead in fourth quarter.
Southern Miss dropped its eighth game of the season, falling to 9-8 overall and 2-6 in Sun Belt play. The Lady Eagles were slightly more efficient that the Trojans overall, shooting 38.8 percent compared to Troy's 32.9 percent. The Trojans, though, made five three pointers and a whopping 26 shots at the free throw line to escape with the victory.
The evening included a few milestones for the Lady Eagles. The game was Coach Joye Lee-McNelis' 600th game as head coach of the Lady Eagles. McNelis is now 318-282 at Southern Miss in her 20th season in charge.
On the scoring front, Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) sank a free throw with 9:35 to play to net her 1,000th career point. Grayson is now the 31st Lady Eagle in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. She joins fellow Lady Eagle Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) in the 1,000-point club, marking the first time two active Lady Eagles had 1,000 career points at Southern Miss since 2019-20 when Shonte Hall (1,264) and Respect Leaphart (1,022) a millennium of points each.
Tonight, Troy's (10-8, 7-1 Sun Belt) made the most of 15 trips to the free throw line in the third quarter, connecting on 11 to hold off a strong quarter 24-point quarter from Southern Miss. The Trojans made another 11 trips to the line, hitting seven shots, in the fourth quarter, finishing the second half 18-of-26 from the free throw line. Comparatively, Southern Miss made 11 free throws on 12 attempts in the same half.
Davis' 34-point night was a season-high, but not enough to overcome three double-figure Trojan scorers. Troy's Ja'Mia Hollings also brought down a double-doubles worth of points and rebounds, going for 12 points and 15 boards on the night.
