Lady Eagles Head to Troy to Start Alabama Road Trip

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball leaves Reed Green Coliseum for the first time in two weeks for a one-week trip through Alabama. Southern Miss' trip starts with a Thursday, Jan. 25, trip to Troy, Ala., for a 6 p.m. tipoff against the Trojans.

LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss fell to ULM at Reed Green Coliseum in a 70-58 final score. The Warhawks were able to pull away late to secure the win and held Southern Miss to a season-low 35.6 percent from the floor.
The Lady Eagles were unable to consistently reach the basket, scoring 46 points in the second and fourth quarters combined but just 12 in the other two. Monroe moved to 13-5 on the year and sits near the top of the conference standings at 5-2.
Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 18 points with Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Noelani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y.) also chipping in 10 of their own.
ABOUT TROY
Troy enters the game 9-8 overall but is squarely in second place in the conference race with a 6-1 record. The Trojans' only loss in conference play came in a one-point loss to Georgia State to open conference play.
Troy overcame an 0-6 start to win nine of its last 11 games, including six-straight to this point. 12th-year head coach Chanda Rigby is no stranger to the Sun Belt sits third all-time in Sun Belt victories and is first among active Sun Belt coaches.
Rigby's Troy squads excel in getting to the basket and when unable to score on its first attempt, Troy also paces the conference in rebounds. Troy's 44.18 boards per game is 13th-best in the nation and four Trojans average at least five boards per game. On the offensive side, Troy averages 78.4 points per game, ranking 28th nationally in scoring.
Troy's production comes from volume rather than efficiency. The Trojans' 41.2 field goal percentage is just 164th nationally.
Makayia Hallmon leads a group of four Trojans who average double-figure scoring performances. Hallmon has 16.2 points per game and is in contention with Tai'Sheka Porchia (13.4), Nia Daniel (12.9) and Ja'Mia Hollings (12.9). Hallmon was preseason All-Sun Belt First Team and Porchia and Hollings earned Second Team laurels as well.
THE TROY SERIES
Southern Miss leads the overall series 5-0 dating back to 1982, though the most recent margins of the last two games have been incredibly tight. The Lady Eagles knocked off the reigning conference champions in their inaugural Sun Belt game last year and ended their 2022-23 home slate with another win over the Trojans.
AFTER THIS
Southern Miss heads south to Mobile, Ala., for a Saturday, Jan. 27, game against South Alabama. Tipoff at the Mitchell Center is set for 2 p.m.
Southern Miss beat South Alabama in their first meeting 77-69 to snap a seven-game losing skid. South Alabama (7-12, 0-7) is still searching for its first Sun Belt win. The Jaguars are hosting Texas State on Thursday before welcoming in the Lady Eagles.
