Reed Green Coliseum (8,095) | Hattiesburg, Miss.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Eagles moved to 9-7 on the year after picking up their second Sun Belt win in an 82-75 win over Georgia State. Southern Miss proved itself by holding off the Panthers' offensive attack and enjoyed a career day from Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.).
Grayson brought down 19 rebounds in the game – the most by any Lady Eagle since 2009 – to set a new career-high on the glass and complete her 14th career double-double. Grayson, along with Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.), were able to record double doubles in back-to-back games. The two also made up a group of four Lady Eagle starters that finished with double-figure scoring.
The four double-figure Lady Eagles were led by Grayson and Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) who scored 18 points and followed closely by Noelani Cornfield's (Gowanda, N.Y.) 17 and rounded out by Bracey's 10.
The win also marked the first-back-to-back win for the squad since losing seven-straight games.
ABOUT ULM
The Warhawks are off to the best start in decades, holding a 12-5 (4-2 Sun Belt) record. Over the past three years, ULM won just 14 games and has already captured 12 final decisions this season.
Monroe's audacious turnaround has been led by first-year head coach and Southern Miss graduate Missy Bilderback, who previously led Jones County Junior College to its greatest run in program history before moving to Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Bilderback overhauled ULM's roster, bringing in eight transfers, many of them her former junior college stars, to rejuvenate the program.
Needless to say, it seems to have worked. Three Warhawks average double-figure scoring, led by Clemson transfer and former JCJC star Daisha Bradford's 20.5 points per game. Nunu, as she is known, leads the squad in points, rebounds (7.6 per game), steals (4.8 per game), steals (33) and minutes (33.6 per game).
THE ULM SERIES
Southern Miss and ULM first got together in 1978 with the Warhawks taking an 88-82 decision in Monroe. Since then, ULM has won just seven more games since then while the Lady Eagles have taken 18, including the next eight after that first meeting.
Under Joye Lee-McNelis, Southern Miss is 5-5 against the Warhawks though three of those Warhawk victories came in McNelis' first three seasons while she was refitting the Lady Eagle roster.
Since joining the Sun Belt, Southern Miss is 2-0 against ULM and is 12-1 overall at Reed Green Coliseum against the Warhawks. ULM's lone win in Hattiesburg came on Dec. 28, 2005.
AFTER THIS
Southern Miss hits the road for a two-game swing through Alabama, playing at Troy on Thursday, Jan. 25, and at South Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 27.
