HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss track and field team opens its 2024 indoor season Friday at the Vulcan Invite, hosted by UAB at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The originally scheduled meet, the Blazer Invite, set for Friday was canceled due to bad weather expected in the Birmingham area.
The field portion of the meet gets underway at 9 a.m. with men's and women's shotput, the men's and women's long jump, the men's high jump and the women's pole vault competitions. The 60 meters preliminaries begin things on the track side at 11Â a.m.
The CrossPlex is the site of the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship, Feb. 19-20. Golden Eagle coach Jon Stuart likes to have his teams compete here to get used to the track for the big meet later this winter.
"We want to run there to make sure that our kids are used to the track and used to the banks and trying to run on a tight track," said Southern Miss track and field coach Jon Stuart. "We want to run at the facility that we are going to compete at our conference championship, so that is why we go there."
The Blazer Invite is the first of four meets for the Golden Eagles this winter, before returning to the league championship meet in February.
