Indoor Track and Field Captures Six First Places in Vulcan Invite Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's and women's Indoor Track teams opened the 2024 season Saturday with six first-place showings at the Vulcan Invite at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
"We had a great opening meet to our indoor season with a couple of school records and six victories," said Southern Miss Coach Jon Stuart. "It is extremely important for us to build momentum early in the season and we accomplished that here today."
The women's squad, which saw 15 top eight finishers on the day, got first-place finishes from Jaellene Burgess in the 500 meters with a time of 1:16.85, while Za'Isha Fraser won the Triple Jump with a mark of 12.33 meters. Fraser also finished 4th in the long jump with a mark of 5.66 meters. Jada McDougle placed twice during the meet with a third-place in the 60 meters with a 7.47 race, along with 6th-place in the 300 meters with a 39.34.
On the men's side, the Golden Eagles saw 17 top eight finishes and ended with the top finish in four different events, including Adrian Harris in the 500 meters with a time of 1:03.54. The other three victories came in field events and included Deaundre Ward in the long jump at 7.48 meters, Zayne Palomino in the high jump at 2.18 meters and Piers Cameron with the top mark in the weight throw at 16.97 meters. Cameron also finished third in the shot put with a 16.60-meter mark.
Trinity Benson's time of 39.03 in the women's 300 meters established a school record, while Javel Fullerton's race of 34.23 in the men's 300-meter race proved to be the best in school history as well.
The Golden Eagles return to action, Jan. 19-20, at the Vanderbilt Invite in Nashville, Tenn.
