HATTIESBURG, Miss.- This Thursday at 4 p.m., the Southern Miss Soccer team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 SBC) will be playing at home once again, hosting Northwestern State (0-3-0, 0-0-0 SLC) at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles hold a 4-1-0 record over Northwestern State in their overall series, spanning back to 1997. The teams' most recent encounter occurred 12 seasons ago in Natchitoches, La., where the Black & Gold team suffered a 2-0 defeat. Despite this sole loss, Southern Miss has allowed just four goals across all their face-offs.
Last time out: The Golden Eagles secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory against Mississippi Valley on Aug. 26. Valley scored the opening goal in the first period, but freshman Parker Martin marked her first collegiate goal, leveling the score in the 34th minute; the first half ended 1-1. Adaira Nakano broke the tie in the 79th minute, achieving her first career goal. Possession kept changing, but no one could capitalize on their shots. Goalkeeper Alex Helbling encountered seven shots and successfully blocked five of them. On the offensive side, the team took a total of 24 shots during this match, marking their highest count in the past two years.
Scouting Northwestern: The weekend approaches for the Lady Demons with a 0-3 standing, having recently suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mississippi State in Starkville. The Bulldogs managed to secure a goal within the opening four minutes, followed by two additional goals before the first period concluded. Displaying a solid defensive performance, Mississippi State prevented NSU from making any meaningful shots except for one. The leadership of Northwestern State falls to Ian Brophy, who is in his inaugural year as head coach.
The matchup is slated for 4 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex on Aug. 31. Streaming and live stats will be available.
