Southern Miss Advances to NCAA Auburn Regional Final Round with 9-4 Win over Samford

AUBURN, Ala. – Matthew Etzel, Slade Wilks and Nick Monistere each drove in a pair of runs to lead No. 2 Southern Miss to a 9-4 NCAA Auburn Regional elimination game victory over No. 3 Samford Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park.
The Golden Eagles improved to 43-18 as they overcame a two-plus hour rain delay early in the contest. The win propelled them into the championship round as they play Penn (34-14) later Sunday evening.
Danny Lynch gave the Golden Eagles an early lead with a solo home run to right in the second inning for his 13th of the year.
After Samford tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a Josh Rodriguez run-scoring double, the Golden Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the third with a sacrifice fly by Dustin Dickerson and a ground out by Slade Wilks.
A two-run fourth-inning triple by Andrew Bennett tied the score at 3-3 while the Bulldogs (37-25) took their only lead 4-3 a frame later on a Lucas Steele on an RBI single.
Southern Miss then exploded for four runs on a two-run double from Monistere and a two-run single from Etzel. The Golden Eagles then added a solo tally in the eighth on sacrifice fly by Rodrigo Montenegro, before Wilks added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Reliever Kros Sivley (4-1) collected the win as he limited Samford to a run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Chandler Dawson then threw two scoreless innings with a hit surrendered to earn his first save.
Samford reliever Jake Holifield (2-3) allowed four runs on two hits over 2/3 of an inning to suffer the loss as the Bulldogs had their season end.
