HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss left-handed pitcher Justin Storm retired 17 of the 18 hitters he faced as the No. 2 seed Golden Eagles also scored eight times in the final inning to defeat previously unbeaten No. 4 seed Penn, 11-2, late Sunday night in the NCAA Auburn Regional to force a winner-take-all contest to determine the champion at Plainsman Park.
The Golden Eagles (44-18) and the Quakers (34-15) play at 2 p.m., Monday in the final regional contest with the winner moving on to face Tennessee, who captured the NCAA Clemson Regional.
Down 2-1 in the fourth when Storm entered the game with the bases loaded and one out, the junior from Madison, Miss., fanned both batters to end the threat.
He then retired the next 14 batters, which included eight strikeouts not including his first two to open his outing, before allowing a two-out double off the big wall in left field before getting a come-backer to end the game.
Storm improved to 6-2 on the year as he allowed one hit and punched out a career-best 10 over 5 2/3 innings, mirroring his performance against LSU in the same round game of the 2022 Hattiesburg Regional, leading his team to victory that day propelling them into the regional final.
The Quakers jumped out in front with a solo home run by Wyatt Henseler over the center field wall for his 18th of the year.
The teams then traded runs – the Golden Eagles scored on an RBI single from Monistere in the second while Penn retook the lead 201 on a sacrifice fly by Cole Palis.
Southern Miss took the lead for good in the sixth with a pair of tallies. Monistere led off the inning with a walk, and then scored on the next batter, when Carson Paetow tripled down into the right field corner. The throw was wide at third base that allowed Paetow to score.
The designated visitors then put the game away in the ninth by tying a season-high for most runs in an inning with eight.
Slade Wilks led off the frame by reaching on a throwing error by the Quaker shortstop. Christopher Sargent, who had three hits, singled, before Tate Parker knocked in the first run with a double. A two-run single by Monistere after an out increased the advantage before Rodrigo knocked in a run on a fielder's choice with a late throw to the plate to erase Monistere. Etzel then singled in a run before Dustin Dickerson blasted a pitch over the center field wall, a three-run shot for his ninth of the season, to complete the scoring.
The inning run total tied for the most in a frame by the Golden Eagles this season with the other time coming in the third at Tulane on Apr. 26.
Penn reliever Tommy Delany allowed two runs over 1 1/3 innings on two hits and four walks to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
